The Commissioner of Police, Cross River State command, CP Olusegun Omosanyin has described the media as a vital organ for successful crime fighting.

CP Omosanyin made the remarks when he received the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Cross River State chapter in his office in Calabar.

He reassured the union of the dedication of the security agency in maintaining peace and combating all forms of crime across the State.

The police boss stated the Command’s resolve to uphold the rule of law, justice equity and fairness in the discharge of its Constitutional mandate as enshrined in relevant laws of the land for a safe and secure society.

He advised journalists in the State to always verify their reports before publication adding that the deliberate spread of falsehood to create tension amongst citizens would undermine public confidence in the nation’s security architecture.

CP Omosanyin who highlighted how the media could influence public opinion on crime-related issues, also called for a productive collaboration between the police and the media.

Earlier, the Chairman of NUJ, Ms Archibong Bassey, noted that the visit was to inform the Commissioner of Police of the activities lined up for the 2025 NUJ Media Week and also invite him to the event.

She also thanked the Governor of State for creating an atmosphere that is media friendly, making it easier for media practitioners to discharge their duties without fear or favour.

On his part, the Chairman of the Media Week Planning Committee, Mr Eyo Charles, listed the various events that would be held during the week including a visit to the Federal Correctional Center, Aforkang.

Mr Charles also appealed for the support of the police to enable the events to be remarkably successful.

The NUJ, Cross River State Media Week scheduled to officially commence on May 4, will start with a media walk in Calabar to commemorate the annual World Press Freedom Day while other activities will take place within the week to climax with a thanksgiving service on May 11.
