The National Youth Service Corps has been described as a good programme that has provided a lot of youths the platform to serve the nation with a guarantee of a one year job experience and skills acquisition.


These were the opinions of corps members, Abigael Oluwole and Joshua Obetene who were part of a roadwalk in PortHarcourt to celebrate NYSC at 53 today.

Addressing the mammoth crowd of corps members and staff, the Coordinator NYSC Rivers State, Mr. Moses Oleghe who defied the heavy rain during the roadwalk from the State secretariat in Mile-One through Ikwerre road, said Nigerians were proud of the milestones achieved by the Scheme in its 53 years of existence.


Mr. Oleghe hailed efforts of the founding fathers, the DG NYSC, Brig-Gen Olakunle Nafiu, past DGs and members of staff and Corps Members as well as corps employers for the milestone.


A Staff, Mr. ANDREW Ajayi who is about the same age with the NYSC described the scheme as the only programme that crisscrosses the country with graduate youths but however called for increase of budgetary allocation for it.


Mr Ajayi also called for a reconsider of allowance for Corps Members which does not reflect the present economic reality while urging Corps Employers to provide suitable accomodation for them.


Highlight of the event was the cutting of the anniversary cake.
