Teachers in Benin City, the Edo state capital today joined their counterparts across Nigeria on a nationwide protest against the rising cases of abductions, and the recent kidnapped of some Teachers and pupils in Orire, Oyo State, who are still in captivity.

The peaceful demonstration which began at the Teachers house, Siluko road, Ogida Barracks, saw protesters marching through major streets of Benin Metropolis, singing solidarity songs with inscriptions ” Schools should inspire hope not fear” we say no to attack on schools ” among others.

Addressing the gathering , Chairman Nigeria Union of Teachers , Edo state Wing, Comrade Lucky Imaruagheru said the rationale for the protests was to draw Government attention to the plights of the kidnapped pupils and Teachers in Oyo state.

Comrade Imaruagheru who noted that he watched a video were one of the Kidnapped Teacher was beheaded appealed to the Federal Government to ensure that the abducted Teachers and Pupils in Orire, Oyo state are rescued unhurt .

He further appealed for the implementation of the Safe Schools Declaration and the provision of enhanced security for both teachers and Pupils across the country.

” We are calling on Government to wake up to their responsibilities. we appeal to Government to protect lives and properties .We cannot continue to see our Teachers and pupils been Sacrificed, despite their impact to ensure a better nation . It’s not acceptable “.

The National body of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, had on June 1st, 2026 ordered it’s affiliate Unions across the Country to embark on a solidarity protest against Kidnapped school Teachers and Pupils In Oyo state who are still in captivity.
