The Waste Management Society of Nigeria WAMASON, wants corporate organisations to stop the use of fossil fuel which is harmful to the communities around them. This is in a bid to protect the earth and sustain its resources.
The Rivers State Councillor, Dr Williams Iyama and a National Executive, Mr. Benson Abu made the call on occasion of the world earth day celebration for 2026 which focused on accelerating the global transition to renewable energy and promoting clean electricity.
They called on multinational companies operating in Rivers State and other states, to also ensure their waste management processes are healthy and on various governments to enable all tertiary institutions in the country use solar lights or other renewable energy sources; to reduce harmful carbon emissions from their generators.
The said, “It is a call for both the households, corporate entities and the government. Let’s begin to think of sustainable renewable energy.
I would say that the theme this year is our power, our planet. And in this case, the use of fossil fuels, the use of non renewable energy, into the use of renewable energy. And one of them is electrical energy, which is very, very important.”
Also speaking was the Deputy Councilor of Waste management Society of Nigeria, Mr Daye Barango and the Quality and Environment professional of Nigerian Bottling Company NBC in PortHarcourt, Mr. Daodo Akindele whose facility they toured as he restated conformity with regulatory standards of waste disposal.
Barango explained, then Akindele for NBC;
“We had a lot of experience seeing how the company manages her waste effluent, especially as it concerns the discharge and the process before the discharge. It was quite a very good experience.
We don’t dispose any waste in the environment and any waste that goes to the environment is processed and we ensure it conforms with regulatory standards. We have our own standards, we ensure it conforms with regulatory standards before taking it out. We try as much as we can to maintain our environment. Infact if we do not, it will also affect us because some of us live there.
According to the other Waste Managers interviewed, the carbon footprint in the world today is very high due to the burning of fossil fuels and the only way to sustain life is to protect the planet.
