FEDERAL GOVERNMENT PROMISES TO CONNECT OGONI LAND TO NATIONAL GRID AS PART OF CLEANUP GAINS

The Minister of Environment, Mr. Mohammed Abdulahi says Ogoni land will be connected to the National Grid as a sustainable measure of the cleanup of oil impacted areas in the communities. 

Mr. Abdulahi who made this known while on a visit to stakeholders in Ogoni and remediation sites, told the people that the President is committed to the cleanup exercise in  Ogoni land.

The visit afforded the Minister the opportunity to interact with the traditional rulers, local government chairmen, the youths as well as staff of Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project, HYPREP  to chart a new course in the implementation of United Nations Environment Programme, UNEP report, on Ogoni cleanup.

While speaking to the people, the Minister of Environment, Mr. Mohammed Abdulahi who told the stakeholders that President Muhammadu Buhari is determined to see to the proper remediation of oil impacted sites, revealed that Ogoni land made up of four Local Government Areas will be connected to the National Grid to be able to sustain the water project executed as part of the exercise as well as boost economic activities in the localities.

Mr. Abdulahi maintained that livelihood aspect of Ogoni cleanup will be intensified and expanded for the overall benefit of the residents.

On his part, the Project Coordinator, HYPREP, Dr. Ferdinand  Giadom,  who emphasized  staff welfare,  assured the minister  that the workers have been mandated to add more efforts to meet the  target time of project delivery.

The project coordinator who conducted the minister round water scheme sites and remediation areas, explained that the remediation is based on  bio-cell technology.

In their presentations, The President, Supreme Council of Ogoni Traditional Rulers, His Royal Majesty Chief Godwin Gininwa and the President, Ogoni Youth Federation, Comrade, Legborsi Yamaabana asked the minister to make provision for OGONI residents to enjoy the benefit of the cleanup project including employment opportunities.

The respondents gave assurance that  an enabling environment  will be provided for the successful completion of the projects.
